Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Deidre Rombach, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at The Boulevard Senior Living of Wentzville, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t optional — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating a Warm, Connected Environment

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

Every interaction becomes a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also experience the emotional and social benefits of genuine human connection.

Residents and team members enjoy a festive holiday gathering amid Christmas decorations.

To me, community means creating a warm, family-like environment where residents, families, and team members feel supported and connected. It involves fostering meaningful relationships across Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. When all neighborhoods come together to share experiences and support one another, everyone feels celebrated and included.

Building these connections begins with learning residents’ backgrounds, interests, and stories. When we understand who they are, we can design programs that reflect their lives and encourage authentic engagement.

Strengthening Bonds Within and Beyond Our Walls

Encouraging connections begins the moment someone joins our community. Our Welcome Committee and team introduce new residents to their neighbors and pair them with a Resident Ambassador. This personal approach helps each person feel comfortable and included from the start. We also promote engagement through small-group activities, events, and floor meetings that strengthen friendships and nurture the family atmosphere that defines The Boulevard Wentzville.

We extend these connections into the surrounding towns through strong partnerships with local churches, schools, and organizations. Our community participates in health fairs, senior fairs, parades, and Acts of Service projects. We also host local groups for special events, performances, and monthly programs. These collaborations create a sense of unity and mutual support between our residents and the wider community.

One of my favorite partnerships is with The Morgan School. Their students join us each year for our Tree Lighting Celebration and return monthly for Story Corner and Balloon Volleyball. These intergenerational moments fill our community with joy, energy, and connection — reminding us that meaningful relationships can span any age.

To welcome new residents, our team and Welcome Committee personally greet them, introduce them to staff and neighbors, and pair them with a Resident Ambassador. We check in often during their first month to ensure their needs are met and that they feel part of our vibrant, family-focused community.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches daily life. As Resident Services Director at The Boulevard Senior Living of Wentzville, I’ve seen how these intentional efforts turn our building into a true home and create memories that residents and families treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events — we build a supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
