The Boulevard Senior Living – Wentzville Encourages Intergenerational Relationships Between Children and Older Adults

Category: Senior Living

Author: Deidre Rombach, Resident Services Director

As we age, health becomes a major focus of our daily lives. We begin to think more about eating well, getting enough exercise, and keeping our minds active. But health is more than that – it also includes our relationships with others, specifically intergenerational relationships.

According to an article in Press & News, there are the many benefits of intergenerational relationships between children and older adults.

  • Children who spend time with older adults growing up are less ageist as they get older.
  • It can prevent isolation and loneliness in older adults.
  • It provides a perfect opportunity for young and old to learn from one another.
  • It builds a stronger community.
  • It gives older adults a sense of purpose and helps younger generations have a greater respect for and value of older adults.
  • It helps keep stories and history alive within families and the greater community.

At The Boulevard Senior Living – Wentzville, we promote intergenerational relationships in many ways! Intergenerational partnerships within the community are very important for both the younger and older populations. We are very blessed to have fostered relationships with The Morgan School, Stone Creek Elementary, and Lutheran High School. In my experience, it is vital to establish a contact with your partnerships and work together to create opportunities and events that will be purposeful and bring joy to all involved. Our partnership with The Morgan School, an early childhood school, affords our residents connection through storybook readings, holiday celebrations, and seasonal parades.

Stone Creek Elementary allows for students to share their creative expressions through their choir performances, and The Boulevard After-School program provides hands-on interaction between the students and our residents, fostering lasting relationships. Our partnership with Lutheran High School gives us an opportunity to connect educationally through their robotics program, spiritually with the “Art in Faith” art projects and support the students with a “Back-to-School” church service and visit.

When observing the interactions between children and older adults, it’s easy to see how much older adults really have to offer to children, and vice versa! They share smiles, memories, information, and more. There are mutual benefits from intergenerational relationships. The most important one is it provides an avenue to bridge the generation gap between the age groups. For the older adults, these opportunities keep them active and young at heart, prevents isolation, allows them opportunity to share their wisdom and values with the younger generation, boosts cognition, and improves their sense of well-being. The younger generation benefits through these interactions by helping them develop communication skills, patience, helps create a positive attitude regarding the aging process, and alleviates any fears the children may have regarding older adults. For both generations, it truly provides a sense of joy and purpose!

Each of our communities works hard to foster intergenerational relationships and memorable experiences.
