Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
Growing up, I ate school-provided lunches because we were required to eat in the dining hall. The strangest thing I saw on the school menu was sushi. As a child, it seemed odd to see people eating raw fish.
If I could recreate one school lunch item from scratch, it would be Roulade. We had several versions, but my favorite was always the beef. It’s still one of my go-to comfort foods. The variety of foods I tried at school greatly influenced my decision to pursue a career in culinary arts and gave me a deep appreciation for different cuisines. I still enjoy trying new things and have a wide range of favorite dishes.
If I could create the ultimate school lunch menu, it would include home-cooked comfort foods.
I don’t have specific recipes or tricks for lunchbox meals; they often depend on what I have on hand and what I’m craving. Packing school lunches and meal prepping as an adult share similarities. Including all the basic food groups and offering choices is important, as one meal doesn’t please everyone. Ensuring the meal is nutritious and well-balanced is a priority. Appealing packaging can also encourage people to eat more.
I’d like to see a variety of colorful foods for a breakfast or dinner box. Plates often become boring and beige, but adding color makes them more visually appealing and appetizing.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Boulevard Senior Living of Wentzville Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
