Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Deidre Rombach, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Boulevard Wentzville, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Helping Residents Feel at Home From the Start

A successful move-in experience begins the moment a resident walks through the doors. Before they arrive, their apartment is prepared with welcome information and a welcome basket. These details help them feel expected, valued, and cared for from the beginning.

Move-in day is also a time for support and reassurance. The Resident Services Director stays available to answer questions. They also introduce helpful resources and walk residents through tools like the Arrow App. This helps residents stay connected and informed about community life.

At the same time, the Welcome Committee and Resident Ambassadors are notified. This allows them to begin creating meaningful connections. Their role is to welcome new neighbors and invite them to dine or attend activities. They also introduce them to other residents and share their own positive experiences. Just as importantly, they allow each new resident time to settle in at their own pace.

Building Belonging Through Real Connection

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are simple and sincere. A friendly greeting can help. So can a personal introduction, a meal invitation, or a regular check-in. These small gestures help new residents feel more comfortable participating in community life.

One meaningful example involved a prospective resident who joined the community for a special meal. During her visit, one Resident Ambassador invited her to tour her apartment. She also shared what life in the community meant to her. Then, she called a few other ambassadors to join the conversation.

Residents and team members at The Boulevard Wentzville smile behind a display table during a community event.

What began as a simple introduction became more than an hour of genuine conversation. It also offered friendship and firsthand insight. The prospective resident left feeling welcomed, valued, and connected. She ultimately chose The Boulevard Wentzville as her new home.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they trust shared experience. Hearing about friendships, activities, and daily life from another resident can feel especially meaningful. Fellow residents can offer authentic encouragement and answer questions honestly. They can also show how rewarding community life can be.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community through warmth, inclusion, and connection. Their positive attitudes and active participation create a supportive atmosphere. They help residents feel proud to call the community home. They are the heart of the community. Through their kindness, they help every resident feel welcomed, valued, and at home.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
