Kindness is defined as doing something towards yourself and others, motivated by genuine desire to make a positive difference. Kindness is shown to increase self-esteem and mood, decrease stress levels, improve relationships, slow aging, and is accompanied by emotional warmth. Research shows kindness and mental health are deeply connected.

To me, kindness means being generous towards others, being friendly, and positive. Some ways to encourage kindness and put a smile on someone’s face are giving a hug, smiling at them, or sitting down and talking with them. Giving a sweet note of positivity or encouragement also shows kindness.
I like to inspire others to spread kindness by showing them love and letting them know that I care about them. Showing others that I appreciate them with a pat on the back, a hug, bringing in donuts, or ordering pizza are small ways to show kindness and it puts smiles on our wellness teams faces.
An example of kindness I recently witnessed was staff setting up a special gardening box for a resident who loves to garden. She will now be able to plant the flowers she adores, improving her quality of life.
Kindness is important to health and well-being. Kindness towards others makes me happy. It makes the atmosphere a more positive and pleasant place to be.
