The Boulevard Senior Living – Wentzville Discusses How to Have Meaningful Visits With Someone Living With Dementia

Category: Dementia Resources

Author: Sanela McKinney, Memory Care Director

Dementia is an umbrella term for loss of memory and other thinking abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life. When someone is diagnosed with dementia, at least two parts of the brain are dying. Dementia is progressive, chronic, and terminal, which creates many challenges.  Relationships continue to be vital to families, regardless of a dementia diagnosis. At The Boulevard Senior Living – Wentzville we have some ideas and suggestions to help you have successful visits with your loved ones.

Family and friends can make a big impact on our residents and how a visit will go. Everyone enjoys having visitors and all visits should be a great source of support, comfort, and a way to stay connected with others.

There are some things a family member can do to make the visit pleasant. Set a time and date for your visit, contact the community, check their daily schedule and routine, and ask for advice from the memory team on what your loved one enjoys doing. Bring some resources with you, like old pictures or a sample of music they enjoyed listening to. Concentrate on your loved one’s current ability.

Visits should be scheduled based on each individual and their care plan. A better understanding of their daily routine can make a big impact on how the visit can go.

When it is time to end your visit, remind your loved one how much they are loved and let them know that you will be back to visit with them soon. Prior to leaving, ask a staff member to help you with engaging them with an activity program.

We hope this information has given you some fresh tips and ideas for visiting someone living with dementia. Quality connections are essential for the person living with the disease, as well as yourself. If your visit still doesn’t go well, don’t beat yourself up. Every day is a new day. Be patient and you will figure out what works best. Giving your time to someone living with dementia is the best gift possible.
