Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® recognizes the role of assisted living in America while providing a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance encourages assisted living communities around the country to celebrate the individuals they serve while simultaneously educating members of the public about what assisted living truly looks like.
This year, The Boulevard Senior Living – Wentzville is celebrating the 2022 theme of “joyful moments” from September 11th to September 17th by recognizing how each department plays a role in creating joy for our residents and staff members.
I mean, it sounds totally cliche, but being a leader of a senior living community is honestly building up your team and finding a way to inspire them. With the residents, it means promoting their independence for as long as possible and empowering them. Finally, it’s about trust, with not only your team and residents, but their family members.
Our team creates joyful moments on a regular basis in our community:
1. We have a resident, Joe in Assisted Living, who used to be a farmer. We were able to find him space to grow some plants and vegetables, so he can continue to get his hands in the dirt.
2. Jane, a resident in Assisted Living, volunteers with the Resident Services department to provide resident-directed programming.
3. The monthly Acts of Service provides great joy for our Independent Living residents by their willing support and through their donations.
Jane in Assisted Living feels the pool brings her the most joy living here and looks forward to daily. She also finds joy in providing daily devotion to her fellow residents. Jane’s favorite memory, so far, is working with Brian from the non-denominational church. He comes to the community once a week. They sing, Jane does one of the readings, and listens to the devotional provided.
We plan to make National Assisted Living Week special in our community. We’re planning to have a specific day for every department to provide an event for the Assisted Living residents. Memory Care residents will experience a scenic trip with the new Memory Care Director. Resident Services day will have the school choir volunteering to spread joy with their music. Plant Operations will be putting on a BBQ of the residents’ favorite foods for their time. Administration day will be tie dye t-shirts with Culinary rounding out the week by providing a banana split bar.
Follow us on Facebook to witness all our joyful moments, but especially from September 11th to September 17th as each department celebrates National Assisted Living Week and the many ways each team brings joy to our community staff and residents!
