MLK Day and Acts of Service: The Boulevard Senior Living’s Inspiring Commitment

Category: Culture & Traditions

Author: Deidre Rombach, Resident Services Director

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the third Monday of January to honor the civil rights leader. This American civil rights activist played a key role in advocating for racial equality and justice through nonviolent means. Therefore, people remember Dr. King’s contributions on this day and frequently engage in community service to honor his legacy.

Studies have demonstrated that volunteerism offers numerous benefits, such as:

  • boosting self-confidence
  • offering a sense of purpose
  • promoting physical activity

Moreover, it has a proven track record of reducing stress, alleviating anxiety, combating isolation, and alleviating depression.

Contributing to the Local Area

At The Boulevard Senior Living – Wentzville, many of our residents have spent time volunteering or serving others. To help older adults continue to participate in all that is important to them and to do our part in continuing Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, our community participates in Arrow Senior Living’s Acts of Service initiatives throughout the year. In January, we plan to focus on one specific community service project every month. Our aging adults take pride in these efforts because the work is meaningful and creates lasting relationships with those in their long-term communities.

The residents enjoy participating in community service projects throughout the year, which are fulfilling and rewarding experiences. It provides opportunities to give back to the community and makes positive impacts on the lives of others. Helping others through our Acts of Service projects fosters empathy, teaches responsibility, and boosts self-esteem. Our residents and team members highly appreciate our monthly projects. They find them personally rewarding, which gives them a sense of accomplishment.

In past years, we’ve partnered with local food banks, animal shelters, hospitals, and more. As we head into the new year, we’re excited for the opportunity to continue partnering with our local community to serve others purposefully.

In 2024, we genuinely appreciate the enriching partnerships we have established with various community organizations and schools, strengthening our commitment to creating a positive impact. We take great pleasure in our ongoing collaboration with Hope Seeds and the hosting of their monthly seed-packing event. This initiative nurtures a sense of community among our residents and actively contributes to a global cause, as the packed seeds are shipped to indigenous countries, supporting sustainable agriculture. Our involvement with the local community also includes The Agape House, where our residents volunteer on a monthly basis, participating in meaningful tasks that greatly benefit the Food Pantry.

Our partnerships with local schools, such as The Morgan School, bring joy and camaraderie.

From seasonal events like the:

  • Easter Egg Hunt
  • Halloween Trick-or-Treating
  • Monthly Story Corner
  • Festive Holiday celebrations

These collaborations create lasting memories for everyone involved.

We are excited about the upcoming Stone Creek Elementary School “Boulevard After School Club” in both the spring and the fall. In fostering a supportive environment for learning and growth. Furthermore, our partnership with Lutheran High School’s annual “Back-to-School” event remains a highlight. This marks a special occasion that kickstarts the school year. Their chapel service’s inclusive nature warmly invites our residents, adding a distinctive and meaningful aspect to this event. As we navigate the year ahead, we appreciate the partnerships that strengthen the bonds within our community, fostering a spirit of giving, sharing, and creating lasting connections.
