Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Cooking for Care

As Culinary Director at Boulevard Wentzville, I came to senior living later in my career. After three decades in food service, I had seen many sides of the industry. When I was introduced to senior living, something felt different.

For years, much of my work focused on volume and profit. Senior living brought a new sense of purpose. It felt like giving back. It was not just cooking for service. It was cooking for care.

Residents have taught me that life is a circular journey. People begin life needing care because they are young and inexperienced. Then they grow, live, work, travel, and experience so much. Over time, many return to needing care from others.

That perspective makes the work feel meaningful – especially in memory care. For many residents, memories are part of the richness they carry. Food can help honor those memories and bring comfort along the way.

One favorite tradition is the monthly special meal. These evenings give the culinary team a chance to step back into the high-end restaurant experience. They allow us to create something elevated, thoughtful, and memorable for residents.

Serving With Empathy and Skill

Success in senior living culinary takes empathy, patience, and a thick skin. Restaurants often serve people who are feeling good and have chosen to go out. In senior living, the team serves the same residents every day. Some may be in pain, uncomfortable, or having a difficult moment.

That reality calls for understanding. A successful culinary team cannot take every hard day personally. Instead, they listen, adjust, and keep caring. The work asks for both skill in the kitchen and patience in every interaction.

The difference this work makes can be seen every day. It may be a parade of residents heading to the dining room with their walkers. Many would still cook for themselves if they could. They know good food, and they remember the food they made before moving into the community.

Residents can tell the difference between fresh rolls and day-old rolls. They notice handmade dressings and marinades. Many came from a generation of scratch cooks, and they appreciate a well-cooked meal.

They also appreciate comfort in simple forms. Sometimes, that means a bowl of familiar chicken noodle soup when they do not feel well. When residents know the culinary team cares, they can feel it. Often, they care right back.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
